Abstract:

My Fellows Project will follow my lifelong ambition to be a Hellenist (expert in Ancient Greece) by exploring the methods of education used in Athens and Beyond. I will examine, among other things, the role of education in society, the different schools created in Athens and beyond, the philosophies of leading academics, and the subjects studied in ancient schools. With this research, I will write a report presenting my findings and comparing ancient and modern academic approaches. I will also make a ten-part video series explaining the aforementioned aspects of education, visiting museums, and talking to professors or experts in classics to make my research accessible to a wider audience. In doing so, I hope to not only teach the Severn community facts about Ancient Greece but provide a historical context that helps students understand modern educational institutions and why we learn the way we do.
